Vietnameskisk Mathus

Calmeyersgt. 6, 0183 Oslo

Reviewed by the members of the AWC Book Club on December 2, 1999.

This is a very relaxed place with inexpensive, good sized portions, Vietnamese food.  Silverware and chopsticks sit in a container on the table.  When your meal is served, a basket of various condiments -fish sauce, oyster sauce, red chili with garlic sauce, hot sauce, and Soya sauce, will accompany it.  The restaurant has recently been redecorated with new curtains, lighting, and paint.  It is very much a family place during the day with kids too young to hold their own chopsticks, a sprinkling of  teens stopping for a snack on their way home from school, and couples, business men, work men as well.  During the evening it is mostly couples or groups of friends.

Service is very casual with a help yourself attitude which may include getting your own menu, water, and walking up to the counter to receive and pay your check.  Once you get used to this relaxed style of service, you feel right at home. One never feels rushed.  Not a lot of English is spoken by the staff, but you can not feel intimidated while speaking with another who also struggles with the Norwegian language.  As is the custom in many restaurants in Norway, ordering is done by the dish’s number and/or pointing.

Soup is very much a staple in the Vietnamese kitchen.  Here the wonton soup, # 1 súp hoàn thán (wonton suppe), may be the best in Norway, but only if you like a hint of garlic!  Chä giò, homemade spring rolls (varruller) #3, are also very good.  Phö tài nam, bò vò viên (suppe m/ rispinner, biff og kjøttboller) #6, is recommended.  This soup contains rice noodles, thin slices of beef and meatballs, and is served with sweet basil leaves, bean sprouts, lemon wedge, and a deceivingly small-but really hot and flavorful-chili pepper on the side.  These ingredients are added to the soup to meet the individual’s taste.  This soup is also available in a seafood variety #6a house specialty: soup with rice noodles and seafood (husets spesial: suppe m/ rispinner og sjømat).  One day by chance, I shared a table with former AWC member, Lilly Tham, who recommended #9 Hù tiéy Nam Vang soup with rice noodles, pork, liver, tongue and shrimp (Nam Vang suppe m/ rispinner, svinekjøtt, lever, tunge og scampi).

Stekte nudlers retter (Fried noodle dishes) are also a good choice.  Also featured are main courses with rice (middag retter med ris) member recommendations of "good and tasty" are  #23a chicken with paprika and cashew nuts in chili sauce (kylillig m/ paprika og cahsewnøtter i chilisaus) and #24 chicken in curry sauce with paprika, pineapples and bamboo shoots (kylling i karrrysaus m/ paprika, ananas og bambusskudd).

Other categories available are  special spicy dishes (spesial sterk mat, recommended by one member is Mi xào cám cay, fried noodles de lux in chili sauce (stekte nudler de lux i chilisaus), children’s menu (barne meny), and vegetarian dishes (vegetar retter), the vegetable chopsuey with rice was plain; but for NOK 50, pass the hot sauce please!

Everything on the menu is available for under NOK 100!  With the exception of the three course combination dinners for families (familie middag med flere retter) # 35, 36, 37, 38 (minimum 2 people) NOK 95-115 per person.

Take away is available.

There is also a small, inexpensive wine list.  Spanish Siglo Saco Crianza NOK 210 (Vinmonopolet price NOK 99,50).

Unfortunately, ventilation is not adequate.  Many customers are heavy smokers and although a separate section is provided, it is a problem for smoke sensitive people and contact lens users.
