| | Ragtime
is Norway's only English language cultural magazine. The image of the "immigrant"
in Norway rarely evokes an appreciation of the rich cultural resources an international
community brings. Among the foreigners living in Norway are talented artists and
intellectuals of all kinds - authors, poets, painters, people with serious contributions
to make to the hot debate issues within Norwegian and global society. Since its
founding in 1992, Ragtime has provided a forum where the artists of the multicultural
community may speak their piece and share their work and activities. Ragtime
publishes fiction and poetry, debate articles, reviews of books, theater and art
exhibitions. And interviews: Ragtime's contributors have interviewed: two Nobel
Prize winners, Toni Morrison and Rigoberta Menchu, a Booker Prize winner, Arundhati
Roy, as well as the Israeli author and social commentator, Amoz Oz, to name just
a few. Funded by the Flernasjonal Kulturforening ("Multinational Culture
Association"), its editor, Avanti Flatabø, is from India. The other editorial
board members are from Ireland, USA, England and Norway. In the next issue, due
to come out in mid-June, you'll find an interview with the Haruki Murakami, the
Japanese author of the novel, Norwegian Wood. There's also an article on the lessons
we learn in childhood, one on the art of Roar Schiebler, another on Turkish folklore.
Plus more - including fiction written by AWC member, Susan Schwartz Senstad. The
magazine is available at all Norwegian libraries and may be purchased at these
Oslo bookstores: Norli at Universitetsg. 20-24, Tronsmo at Kr. Augusts g. 19,
and Akademika at the University of Oslo at Blindern. | |
